We currently have nine Annabelle Hydrangeas planted in our front yard. In the spring, some folks leave 'em as is, some prune 'em right to the ground, and others (like me) prune 'em just a little.
Here's how the front five hydrangeas were looking as of yesterday:
Kinda scraggly. I decided they needed a bit of a clean-up.
I grabbed my new polka-dotted gardening gloves, a rake, some clippers, and a measuring tape (please don't judge me).
First, I raked up all the dead leaves that had blown behind them in the fall. I also removed, by hand, all the scrunched up leaves that were caught in the actual bushes.
First, I raked up all the dead leaves that had blown behind them in the fall. I also removed, by hand, all the scrunched up leaves that were caught in the actual bushes.
Once all the dead leaves were gone I took out my tape measure and clipped each stem back to 20". This gave each bush a nice, rounded appearance. It's also good (according to the internet) to keep some of the older stems so that they can support the newer ones (and of course the very large blooms that will appear later on).
Once I was finished clipping back the stems I added some rich, black soil to build the garden bed back up a bit. The bags were on sale, too. Five for $10.
Here's how the bushes are looking now. I still have to edge the garden but there's only so much a girl can do in one day, right?
I'm so proud that I got all that done in one day. It's a miracle!!!!!!!!!!
Wait a minute, I still have all the side bushes to do. :S
P.S. I pruned our hydrangeas the exact same way last spring and you can see how they turned out in the picture below. Not too shabby.

When, oh, when is my yard going to look like this again......?
Hydrangeas are my favourite too. Your yard is really lovely with them in bloom
ReplyDeleteEverything looks so neat and fresh! I know that you feel very satisfied. They will give you more beautiful flowers soon cant wait to see!
ReplyDeleteyour house is so adorable! the hydrangeas suit it so well! we have 4 plants in our front yard, and we have planted all of them so they aren't especially mature since we have only lived here 4 years, but i love them! one day we will move and i think i will come back to visit and see how my hydrangeas are doing and how big they got.
ReplyDeleteA job well done. When the Hydrangea bloom again, you'll know your hard work was worth it :)
ReplyDeleteI am so jealous!! Hydrangeas are one of my favorites! but you don't see them growing on the prairies....I did some raking today in the BnB yard,,,,but it is windy and kinda miserable so I headed in doors!! Your yard will soon be looking very lovely!
ReplyDeletelooks lovely and FRESH already - can't wait to see it in full bloom again!

I love hydrangeas!! I have two in our front flower bed. Our HOA doesn't actually allow them, rules smules ;-) Your house is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting some hydrangeas but I'm not sure how they'd do here. Impressed with the work you got done.
ReplyDeleteYour pic from last year is just beautiful!! Can't wait to see them in full bloom again this year!! Definitely need to add some hydrangeas to my exterior. I really do love them! Do your bushes get a lot of shade? I don't have a lot of shaded spots in my yard...not sure how they would do it full sun!
ReplyDeleteLooking good! What a difference a little clean-up can make, and I'm sure they'll be even better than last years.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally measuring my hydrangeas this year. Such a good idea!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely! My Annabelle Hydrangea lasted approximately two seconds around here. After it was obvious we just didn't have the yard/soil to help it thrive, It continued to die a very slow and painful death. Yours look just beautiful...and way to go keeping them pruned.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Holly

Your house is way too cute! And I also love hydrangeas - so much that I had them in my wedding bouquet.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment on my blo. It is very nice to "meet" fellow adoption folks on this crazy journey. It makes me feel less alone knowing someone out there just gets it.
It looks great Sarah! I need to trim mine down as soon as it stops raining! It really took off last year which was great but it looks like yours in the second picture. Your hydrangeas look beautiful and your front looks so inviting.
ReplyDeleteHI Sarah...I just found your blog and the PC bags gave it away that you are also Canadian...beautiful blog and very 'cute and cozy little cottage indeed! I'm your newest follower...xo

Cute house - reminds me of a lot of them I see in Omaha. Hydrandeas are so beautiful! I know they get pretty big if you don't control them, huh!
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah! Found your blog through a friend of mine's. You have a sweet house that makes me think of home. I now live in Holland (Europe) though and Annabelle are one of the most popular flower bushes here. I had lots in my old house but none in our new garden until I plant some up myself again. If you cut them all the way back to just a few inches off the ground you will get the largest flowers but they will droop in rain as they become top heavy. If you cut them just a little the flower heads will be smaller and have less tendency to fall to the ground in rain. It rains a great deal in Holland so this is important here but maybe not where you are in the US? :-)
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Holland ~
Heidi
Your pictures from last year look fantastic! I bet you can't wait for it to look like that again!
ReplyDeleteStarting today, I'm hosting a 100 Miles in May Challenge on my blog where participants walk/run as much as they can this month. If you're interested in joining stop on by: http://smallhomebigstart.blogspot.com/2011/05/100-miles-in-may-challenge-begins.html
Hi Sarah ~ I hope my hydrangea bushes grow as big as yours! I bought them last spring and they are smallish. We'll see how they do this year. I live in northern IL and it's been an extra cool (and rainy spring), so they're just now getting green leaves back on them. No blooms - or growth - yet!
ReplyDeleteit will happen! all the sudden one day you will look and say... ahh! there is my yard again! spring is alway SO overwhelming for me! your house is so CUTE!
ReplyDeleteYour house Really is so cute with all the hydrangeas in front!! LOVE!
