I should start this by saying I am soooooo picky when it comes to flush mount / semi-flush mount ceiling fixtures. I can honestly say that I only sort of like about 2% of all of them. The other 98% of them are just so ugly to me.
I've been looking online alot lately, since the light in our master bedroom was in serious need of some serious updating.
Proof? Here it was:
The style that I seem to be digging for the bedrooms lately is the semi-flush mount schoolhouse lights. Kind of like these.
Rejuvenation - $135 + taxes, shipping, duties & customs |
Schoolhouse Electric - $119 + taxes, shipping, duties & customs |
They're cute right?
Except I just get so nervous to order anything online when it costs so much money for the light plus the taxes, plus the shipping, plus the duties and customs fees.
So when I saw this light at Lowe's....... we went for it. It was $33. $33!!!
Lowes - $33 |
We had a Lowe's giftcard saved from Christmas so it was kind of like it was free. Ooooh, I like free.
Alex installed it on the weekend to mixed reviews.
I like the contrast of the dark shade with the light walls and trim, plus it matches the bed colour. I think the size works well in the room. It isn't too big or too small. I also like how the shade is closed (no more dust bunnies up there, yay).
However, the overall quality of the fixture is kind of cheap (yeah, I know, that's what you get for $33). The finish is a little glossier than I would have liked, the shade is a bit wobbly and doesn't seem to attach securely to the base. Also, the maximum bulb wattage is 75W so the overall light source is kind of dim.
So, what to do, what to do?
Keep it 'cause it was basically free and still looks pretty cute OR splurge for a better-quality, more expensive light?
Oh, these decisions are hard for a Monday night after going back to work. It's so past my bedtime. :)
We did our entire lake house with lights from Rejuvenation. I am lucky enough to have one just 20 minutes from my house. You will NOT be upset with the money you spend on their lights. They are TOP notch as far as quality goes. We got our outdoor lights from restoration hardware, they weren't all that much less expensive, and they already need to be replaced. I would say splurge, they are worth it!
ReplyDeleteI like it! I say keep it! :)
ReplyDeleteI think it looks cute and it is a bedroom so you probably will have lights on your nite table so you could always spray paint it if you don't like the colour..and do you use those new bulbs you know the energy ones because they do tend to not give off as much light? Well I like it and its a great start to your bedroom.(oh I know what you mean about the doors I have had them for 3 years and never bothered to hang them...now that is hurry up already worthy haha Cheers Frances
ReplyDeleteYa know, I like it. It's up high so maybe it doesn't look so cheap from down below. It actually doesn't look cheap to me but I'll take your word for it. Wobbly doesn't matter as long as it isn't going to come crashing down, cause no one is touching it. As far as being dim, I'm sure you will have some end table lamps right? I like it but you're going to have to like it too cause you're going to see it everyday. Just my 2cents.
ReplyDeleteI have four of these exact lights in hallways in our home and LOVE them. In fact, I will probably put two more in the kitchen. My guess is that you will not get 5 times the quality for 5 times the price with the other choices. I think that close up, they will look pretty much the same. It looks nice in your bedroom!
ReplyDeleteI've used that light twice and I love it. It is currently in our entry. The only thing I would say is to consider the size of the room, it's hard to tell from the picture how big the room is and the scale might be a little off if it was a big room.
ReplyDeleteIt looks nice with your headboard!
I like the look for your bedroom!
ReplyDeleteI have one of those lights too in our powder room and I think it is just great , probably going to buy more for our new house , I have seen beautiful school house lights at local lighting stores one for $99.00 in a warm authentic looking brass much larger in scale though, it is gorgeous, check your local lighting stores you may find what you are looking for and avoid all the shipping etc.
ReplyDeleteBut I think this one is cute .

ReplyDeleteThis one for $52.00 is quite nice as well.
I say keep them. Go big on the other lights in the room. Really how many times do you actually look UP at the light, plus, I think they look great.
ReplyDeleteNicely done, girl! ~Jennifer in MN
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of spray painting it. The issue of its wobbly-ness is annoying but probably won't affect your enjoyment of it on a daily basis. I say keep it.
ReplyDeleteWe replaced our ugly entry light with this one and I love the look of it. We never come in our front door or even use our living room much so it is hardly ever on. Definitely worth the price. :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's a pretty fantastic light fixture for $33 (or free if you have a gift card :) if you ask me! Nice find!!
ReplyDeleteI really like the look of the light. I actually have three in my home right now, a longer one over our table in the kitchen, a semi-flush in the work area of the kitchen and in our computer room. I do think that you get what you pay for. Sometimes what seems like a 'steal' is not worth it. I guess you will have to decide if you can live with the 75 wattage. Is it enough for what you need in the bedroom. Good luck!!
ReplyDeleteI like the look of the light and you can't beat $33(or free!). I'd say keep it and if you want to change it out in a year, you shouldn't feel bad because it's not like you spent much on it.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for lighting for my master bedroom and dining room. Any suggestions?

Oh gosh, I suck at this kinda stuff. If it were me, I would probably just keep it, because I'm lazy and impatient! I think it looks pretty decent and I wouldn't feel like going through the hassle of taking it down, ordering something else, putting that one up, etc. But this is one of the qualities about myself I'm going to try and work on in 2012, so definitely don't listen to me:) The MBR is coming along so cutely:)
ReplyDeleteOK, I'm gonna be odd girl out here...but I say splurge on a higher-quality light fixture. Maybe it's just the angle of the photo, but to me it looks too small for your bedroom. It looks like the kind of fixture that is more suitable to a hallway. I think a bigger light fixture would look much better. Or, how about a flush-mounted ceiling fan?
ReplyDeleteKeep it! It's already up. You don't want to have to box it up and lug is all the way back to the store do you??? You can DIY a lamp or something to add more light. It's a bedroom...lights are out most of the time anyway ;)
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Melanie. The style is perfect for you room! LUV it! However, I think it looks a wee bit too small. I'd go for the next size up and spend a little more money. If you're questioning whether or not it looks good now, then it's gonna bug you later on for sure. :)

Have have that same Lowe's Schoolhouse light in my laundry room, and in a bath, shower area. I love them!
ReplyDeleteI would go with something really blingy and sexy.
