A few months back I came across a photo of a nursery on Pinterest that had a diamond pattern stenciled on one wall. It got my mind racing. In an I-want-to-copy-that-look kind of way.
Could I really, truly break out of my comfort zone and stencil a funky pattern on one of the walls in Little Ninja's nursery? I thought about it. I thought about it some more. I thought about it even more than any person should think about stenciled walls.
{Hello again, indecisiveness.}
It must've been fate because shortly after I couldn't make a decision, I received an email from Royal Design Studio asking if I would like to try out one of their stencils. I did a little happy dance, and then I said yes. Yes, yes, yes!!!
Next came the even harder decision of which stencil to choose. What made it even more difficult was finding out that this little bun in the oven is a boy.
I wanted to choose something whimsical and fun but not too girly. I decided to go with their Endless Circles Lattice Moroccan Stencil. Better Homes and Gardens featured this stencil in one of their articles, see picture below:
Cute, right?
The stencil came in the mail a few weeks ago and I was so eager (but anxious) to get started. Anxious because it seemed like a big project and I always find the hardest part of any big project is starting the very first step.
I called my mom over for back-up (i.e., someone to blame if it didn't turn out. Haha.) Just kidding. I really did need the help. Note to self: Don't decide to tackle this project when you are eight months preggo and HUGE.
I'm not going to write a step-by-step tutorial on how to stencil a wall since there are many other really well-written tutorials and videos out there on the web. And to be completely honest, my project ADD and impatience made me not exactly the best stenciler. I rushed a bit at the end to just get'er done. Translation: touch-ups. However, the project was fairly straight-forward once we got started and the guide marks on the stencil made it easy to figure out where to place it next.
Here are a couple of during shots:
What I found worked really well at the end (see above picture) was to actually cut the stencil so that it fit flush against each wall. That way I didn't have to worry about bending it all crazy-like.
My final verdict on this stencil is: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THE FINAL RESULT. I'm glad I stuck with subtle colours since the stenciled wall adds just the right amount of interest without being too overwhelming or busy. Perfect for a little boy's room if I do say so myself.
{Updated to Add: The colours in the room are Old Prairie by Benjamin Moore and Simply White by Benjamin Moore.}

I'll leave you with two last before and after pictures but don't forget that this room is totally not done yet. If you'd like to see more, you'll have to come back in a few weeks to see the finished room. :)
P.S. Sooooo.... what do you think? Have you tackled a stencil yet? If so, send me a link!

Your stenciled wall is beautiful! It looks so nice with the white woodwork and your refinished floor. What a beautiful nursery this will be.
ReplyDeleteSarah, the stencil looks fantastic and I love the soft color in here! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love it!!!!!! I have been thinking about doing a wall in my bedroom, now you are making me think harder!!!
ReplyDeleteNancy
Looks AWESOME Sarah!! You did a fantastic job!! I have done a few stenciling projects (which I'm sure you already know) & your right, bending it in the corners is the hardest part & can be such a pain! Cutting it is definitely the easier option, just makes it hard to use the stencil again should you decide to do so!!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the results!! Lil' Ninja's room is really coming along nicely!! Can't wait to see more!!
p.s. So glad you are on Facebook now!!
p.s.s. I just shared this link on my FB page & encouraged all of my peeps to like your page!! I tried to tag you in the post, but it wouldn't let me!
ReplyDeleteWow.Wow.Wow. It looks freakin' awesome!! I know that had to be a lot of hard work, especially being preggers, but I'm sure you must feel like it was worth it. It looks soooo great!!
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing! You did such a great job! I've always wanted to try a stencil, but we have textured walls, and I've been afraid of how that would look. Love this so much!

ReplyDeleteYour wall looks awesome! I did do a wall in our master bedroom--very neutral, tone on tone, and now I am working on a large gallery of old family photos to put over the subtle stencil. I am very happy with it, and if I get tired of it, I don't have to rip down wallpaper!
ReplyDeleteWOW! It looks fantastic! Great job mama! :)
ReplyDeleteThe stenciled wall is gorgeous! I think Little Ninja will absolutely love the work his mama has put into his beautiful nursery. Sheila S.

ReplyDeleteI just found your blog via your Simply Klassic Home link up and I'm so glad I did. This is so pretty. So subtle, yet it adds so much. I love that it's something for your little one to grow with too. This would be the perfect stencil for my almost 6 year old's slanted wonky wall.
ReplyDeleteI am about to tackle my first stenciling project in my hallway. I hope it turns out half as nicely as yours did!
Have a wonderful weekend!I'll be following along for sure.
You did a really good job on the stenciling and picking out colours! I LOVE it! I think subtle colours is the way to go with stencils. I can't wait to see the finished room.
ReplyDeleteIt's my dream to get a free stencil from Royal Design Studio. I could never afford to buy one. Their giveaways though never seem to be for Canadians as well, so I might just have to make my own, lol!
Anyway, really nice work! Loving the room so far.

ReplyDeleteGiselle
Love it!! Great idea! It Turned out wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAlso its PPS (post-post-script) ;)
You did an incredible job - I love it!! I'm actually planning on stenciling one wall in my daughter's room with the exact same stencil! Question for you: Did you use the same finish of paint for both paints?
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance!
Thanks so much, Shelly!
DeleteWe did use the same finish for both paints. I know it's not usually recommended for kids' rooms but we used a flat finish because we have an old house with a lot of imperfections in the plaster walls.
Good luck!!!
:)
Hi Sarah, this room looks wonderful!! Just curious, did you paint the entire room with Old Praire first and then roll the stencil wall with Simply White after that? I keep trying to figure out the steps in your pictures and I'm scratching my head! Lol. Thank you!! Katie
ReplyDeleteHi Katie! I hope this explanation will make sense..... here goes! I painted the room all over with Old Prairie first. When I decided to do the stencil, I was hoping that I would be able to just leave the walls as is and paint the stencil with white paint over top. However, once I got the stencil in the mail I realized that it wouldnt' work that way. It would have made the pattern opposite to what I was going for (I wanted the trellis pattern to be white). So, I had to prep the wall by repainting it all white first, then applying the stencil with Old Prairie over top. I hope that helps. Let me know if this doesn't make any sense, lol!
DeleteIt is beautfiul!! I LOVE the look! I'm now considering doing it in gray in my daughter's room. Thanks for the idea.
DeleteLove the look, do not love the price of the stencil. Seems high for a small piece of plastic. Looks great though!
