Hope you don't mind that I waited a bit before writing these last few posts about the nursery. I have a feeling I was on nursery/baby overload there for awhile. Okay, I still kind of am but I'm trying to contain it. ;)
If you are looking for the other related posts, I shared the finished nursery photos here, a Nursery Source List Part I here, and a Nursery Source List Part II here.
So let's take a look at another area of the room. I needed something shallow to fill this wall that wouldn't block the view of the window as you walk in. I thought three shelves would work perfectly for storage and display.
The three crown molding ledges that I ended up using are all from Michael's. I bought each of them at different times so that I would be flagged as a crazy coupon lady could get each one for 40% off. I'm really happy with how the shelves look, however I am quite disappointed with the overall quality. Alex and I will have to make some adjustments (i.e, changing the hanging hardware, adding support brackets) to make sure they are safely secured to the wall once Little Ninja becomes mobile. If you're curious about the issues we had when we tried to install the shelves, read here.
The white picture frame and double matte on the top shelf are both originally from Michael's. Fortunately I had been stockpiling white picture frames for years so I didn't have to go out and buy any of them. They were in my "stash" in the basement. Inside the frame is an illustration from the children's book Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. I just chose the picture that I liked the most and popped it in the frame. The vintage ruler is from an antique market in Florida which my mom picked out for me on her last vacation. Thanks mom!
The wooden bulldozer is from a set of three toy trucks that I found at Homesense. I love how they can be used as a decoration now and a functional toy later on.
The tiny plant is a succulent that I found at Lowe's in their indoor plant section. The little tin that it's planted in was another Homesense find. There were four of those little tins in a wire basket. I scrapped the wire basket and used three of the little pots for my shelf display. The white picture frame was also from my "stash" in the basement. Can't remember where it was from though. Inside the frame is another children's book illustration, this time from The Great Paper Caper by Oliver Jeffers. If you can't see the picture clearly it's of some trees in a forest and each tree has a little door on it. Too sweet.
Inside this white frame (another one from my stash) is a single cardboard flashcard from a set of automobile flashcards that I bought at Homesense. Any one else thinking that I spend too much time at Homesense?!?
The mini cactus is from Lowe's. Darn, it's prickly. The tin pot is the same as the one mentioned above.
Originally I only had two shadowboxes that I used to frame some vintage cars. To read that post, click here. I had wanted a set of three shadowboxes but Homesense only had two at the time. Imagine my surprise when I found another one a day or two before I shared the nursery photos with you. Unfortunately I didn't have any more cars to frame in the third shadowbox. I ended up ordering some more from Etsy. Mounting the new cars is still on my massive to-do list. Since I didn't have any cars, I threw in a metal letter 'S' that was supposed to stand for the name Smith. We were dead set on Smith as a first name for our Little Ninja, but changed our minds at the last second. I mean, the name Cooper just has so many cute short forms and nicknames, right? Oh yeah, the first set of cars were from this Etsy shop, the second set of cars (that aren't in the photo) were from this Etsy shop, and the vintage metal letter was from this Etsy shop.
I think I might like Etsy. I hope Alex doesn't cancel my Paypal account after reading this post.

Alex and I bought the little bear on one of our road trips quite a few years ago. I have no idea why, maybe 'cause he was cute? We named him Ben. Beside the bear is another illustration from The Great Paper Caper. Can you see the little vintage trailer in the picture? So adorable!!! The red car was leftover from the set that I framed.
The wooden cement truck is from the toy set I mentioned above. Another white picture frame from my stash and a cute picture of a friendly snake hanging from a tree. I found the picture in a pile of teacher stuff but I'm not sure exactly what it was from. Whoops!
These teeny shoes are from Old Navy and are still a bit big for the Coopster to wear. Display it is. For now. Although if he gets them dirty he'll be in big trouble. Just kidding, he's a boy!Not really kidding.
I had so many alphabet cards left over from my other framing project in the room that I decided to throw an extra one in a frame. I chose one with a bit of orange to tie in with the orange bulldozer on the shelf as well as the orange stuffed zebra on the other side of the room. I'm not one for ultra bright colours in my all-neutral house but in small doses I think it really works here.
Underneath the shelves are two antique wooden crates/boxes. Both were from an old Canadian dynamite company. Perfect for a boy's room or what?! When I bought them at an antique show in a neighbouring city, they were coated in an ugly orange varnish. My mom stripped it all off for me (since I was preggers at the time) and I gave each one a light sanding to get any remaining shine off. Alex and I screwed in four casters to the bottom of each box. We made sure to pre-drill the holes since the wood was so old and dry we didn't want it to split. Inside one box is a collection of books and in the other is a collection of stuffed animals (which has grown considerably since Cooper was born a few weeks ago, hee hee). I also posted about the boxes here.
I hung up my DIY growth chart behind the door to the room. (You can't see it when the door is open but it is in full view when the you are in the room and the door is closed.) The bottom of the board (where the #1 is) is exactly one foot off of the ground. I had a few readers ask how I'm going to record the measurements. I'm pretty sure that when the time comes, I'll nail in some little tags with tiny finishing nails. The tutorial on how I made the growth chart can be found right here.
Wow. This post took way longer to write than I thought! Only two more posts to go and I'll be finished blabbing on about Mini-Coop's room.
It's gloomy and rainy over here today so I think I'll make a cup of tea, fold some laundry, snuggle the little guy, and possibly bake my favourite raspberry bran muffins.
Oooooh excitement over here!
:)
What are your plans for the weekend? We're heading to Lowe's and Home Depot to make some big decisions about one of our current projects. Except it's not a project that I've shared with you yet. Are you curious? I'll make sure to spill some details soon but for now I will leave you in suspense. Dun dun dun......
For now though, how about only one picture of Cooper? Here he is at 5 weeks old, in my favourite outfit. Not pictured are tiny, baggy grey joggers. *Melt*
P.S. Right now his eyes are the perfect shade of grey-blue. Please tell me they will stay this colour, k?
P.S.S. I finally found an extra tidbit of time to reply to the comments in my last post. Wahoo, I'm getting better at this time management with a new baby thing!!!!

The room is adorable but Cooper is so cute he could be edible!!! Love babies! I'm glad you named him Cooper because it suits him, he doesn't look like a Smith! Can you ever have too much Homesense? I don't think so :)

K,
DeleteYou're right.
I should just succumb to my Homesense addiction. :)
LOVE it! So simple and yet so striking! Nice work!!!

DeleteThank you so much, Jen!
What an adorable little man! And such a great room! He is lucky to have a momma with such a keen eye! :) What a great space you've made for him to grow up in!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Kendall.
DeleteAlex just told me this morning that little man needs to start sleeping in his crib in his room.
:(
Oh well at least he'll be able to start enjoying it. Hahaha!
LOVE your designs - especially the framed art! You inspire me once again! :)
ReplyDeleteHee hee, thank you!!!
DeleteLove love LOVE your nursery! I really need to get around to making my little guys room as awesome as yours is. Also completely love the outfit! A word of advice, if you think the outfit is adorable PUT IT ON HIM! I remember having this little tank top romper for when my son was itty bitty and would always "save it for something special" well, when the day rolled around that I thought was special enough to pull it out it didn't fit anymore! SO SAD! So love em up in the moment because they grow so fast!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Stephanie!
DeleteI have the most adorable little onesie with little skulls on it that I've been saving for when we go out and about... so I'm going to take your advice and just have him wear it around the house. He has to look cute for his mom, too, right?
:)
Ahhh what a cutie!! The nursery looks fabulous - I love those wooden crates, they fit the room perfectly and love how you put them on castors. PS - stop by to enter my giveaway for a blurb photobook credit!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Heather!!
DeleteThose wooden crates are my fave, fave, fave thing in the room.
Did I just write "fave" three times? Ummmm, yeah.
;)
The nursery looks so great. Love, love the antique crates for the books and toys! Great job!

Thanks so much Alicia!
DeleteI think those old crates are my favourite thing in the room. So much character.
P.S. I took a quick peek at your site and love your blog header and design!
:)
HI Sarah! Just found your blog through pinterest and love it! Your nursery for your sweet boy is so perfect and your photos are gorgeous! I'm due with my own little boy in August, so I'm excited to have found your blog. Have a great week, girl!
ReplyDeleteHey Lindsay!
DeleteThanks so much for saying hi and for leaving such a nice compliment on our little guy's nursery. :)
You are going to love having a little boy. They are just the sweetest!! I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well and hopefully I'll hear an update when he is born. :)
i love the book bins. (especially since they roll!)
ReplyDeleteExcept I just realized that little boys love to ride in things with wheels. I'll be buying a baby gate for the top of the stairs soon for sure. Hahaha.
Delete:)
Hi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteLove your nursery, so charming and beautiful! We are still adding the finishing touches to ours (seems like its never ending, I'm always finding new things I want to add). I might have to steal a few ideas from you - love the car applique on the pillow you made for instance! But our little guy is expected to arrive any day now so we'll have to see what gets done and what doesn't. Glad to hear you are enjoying being a mom - I can't wait.
All the best,
Katrina :)
Katrina,
DeleteThanks so much for your comment. :) We love how Cooper's nursery turned out but I am surprised at how little time we spend in there right now. I'm too wimpy to let him sleep in there alone yet. ;)
I took a peek at your nursery and you did an amazing job! It totally looks like the Sarah Richardson nursery that you used for your inspiration. My favorite part has to be those alphabet letters!
Good luck with your labour and delivery and I hope you'll post photos of your little one soon!
Your baby's nursery is the most perfect nursery I've ever seen. I love it all.
ReplyDeleteAwwwwww. ♥
DeleteHe is so adorable! Really like the nursery room you've put together, its definitely keeping up with the nursery trend (www.eieihome.com/blog/6-trendy-nurseries.html). I think its great that you've included cactus in the room, looks really lovely!
ReplyDeleteThank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!
DeleteWow, Sarah! I've been missing out on all this! Your website is pretty cool, and your nursery is too cute. What do you charge for consulting? I move this fall!
ReplyDeleteReading your blog for the first time and I love it!!!! I have a little darling too, sometimes I am too tired but also trying to do projects, you are inspiration!!!!
ReplyDeleteHi! I foun your blog from Pinterest and would love to know the paint color you used on the walls. The nursery is sweet and bright! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Brittney,
DeleteThe paint color is called Old Prairie by Benjamin Moore and it is a subtle green-grey in person.
:)
