Babies, Baby Proofing, and Baby Gates

Those eyelashes are out of control people!

Since Cooper was born, I've learned that babies are kind of all-consuming (in the best way imaginable of course).

Before he popped on the scene I had these grand plans that I would be one of those super-mom types. I'd have meals on the table at 5:00 p.m. sharp every night. My house would be the cleanest it had ever been. I'd take the dogs on long, relaxing walks every morning. I'd have all kinds of time (while the baby was napping or playing happily on a blanket) to bake, paint furniture, take pictures, exercise, blog, etc. etc. etc.

Um, yeah. Reality check.

The last few weeks have been so busy! Little Ninja is getting into everything. He's crawling like crazy, pulling himself up onto anything and everything, and even cruising around while holding onto furniture. Suddenly everything in our house is a baby hazard!

I've been baby-proofing as much as possible, however I still need to follow the little guy around everywhere he goes since he's not quite steady on his little feet yet. Our living room has large openings into the sun room and dining room so it's hard to keep him in one spot.

We've been shopping around for a baby gate that we can use in the doorway between the living room and kitchen. We are currently on our third one in two weeks. Alex is having a real blast installing and then uninstalling each one.

First we tried this one. The plastic hinge broke on the second day so we had to return it. I'm kind of glad because the white was so white it almost looked blue. Which obviously is unacceptable. ;)

Then, I saw a wooden baby gate (with a cute shape) at Wal-Mart. I brought it home all excited-like because I was going to paint it to match our trim color. After a quick discussion with Alex I realized that if I don't have time to brush my hair then I probably don't have time to paint a brand-new baby gate. So, we returned that one too.

Finally, we found one that we sort of like. It's plain but it works pretty well so far.

You can bet that I would much rather have some adorable wooden gates that I've seen on Pinterest. Oh, you know the ones I'm talking about.

However since we would need at least four gates, it's just not practical for us invest the time into making them right now.

{Alex has been making good progress on the basement and there is no way I'm going to distract him at this point!}

So, in response to this itty bitty hurtful comment that I received earlier today......

........ I haven't been posting anything new lately because I'm a new mom and my bright, energetic, beautiful son has been keeping me verrrrrry busy. :)

$5 ball from Wal-Mart? Best investment ever!

P.S. I decided to end all of my posts with some kind of random information. I'm pretty sure I did that anyway but now it's official. Let's see if I can stick with it for more than a day!

Today's Random:

Every morning I put down a big quilt over the living room rug so that the baby has an area to play that is relatively dog fluff-free. I take the lint brush to it a few times a day but I'm not sure why. Every single time I turn my back for a second, when I turn around one of the dogs is lying on the quilt! Gahhhhh! :)

  5. I'm with ya! Ignore that jerk. It's your blog. You can write. Not write. Only draw funny pictures on it. Who cares! Seriously - who has time to be a troll these days. Jeesh.

Cooper is adorable. Can't wait to hear what you do to baby proof - Luca just started crawling so we are right behind you!

  6. I've just found your blog a few weeks ago and love it. I also have a mover who gets into everything (19 months) and I try to blog. It's just plain hard sometimes to do anything let alone write. Your little boy is adorable, by the way. I look forward to when you get a chance to update.

  7. What an idiot! That's one reason I cut out the anonymous comments on my blog, I never had any problems with it on but I figure why invite it!
Love your blog and Coops, he always makes me smile!

  8. I can't believe that comment!!!

Cooper is adorable and obviously deserves all the attention you have :)

  9. Your beautiful son will only be a baby (toddler, child, teenager) for a very short time, so spend your time with him and blog when you can. We'll wait for your great posts. My baby is graduating this year (the other two are long gone). If I could go back for just any old day when they were young, I would gladly give up something exciting that I could be doing alone!

  10. Aw, ignore that horrible comment. Your posts are always worth waiting for :) Enjoy Cooper - he is gorgeous. x

  11. what is wrong with people...
I wish I had pinterest when I a young mom, that cool baby gate is awesome

  12. Your baby is precious, looks just like you! Also, the building your own baby gate sounds like a great idea but I agree, you never really have time... or so I have heard, I have yet to become a mom.

  13. Love your blog keep doing what you do! Can't believe someone has the audacity to criticize a mom for not blogging!

  14. I have only been reading your blog for a month but I love it! I even went back and read your older posts. Your blog is for you, your readers are just along for the ride. Blog when you can, I know I'll keep reading!

  15. What a hurtful comment from Anonymous... of course that person had to hide their real name.... please do not take it serious as that type of person only vomits out poison. You have a lovely blog that many of us adore. I look forward to your newest blog post. Your son is adorable and yes they take a lot of time and effort but oh so worth it all. It is not like the books say it will be....it is much better with the real life stuff happening not that so called perfect life. Take the time to be with your baby as you know all ready they grow so fast and you can never get that back again...so snuggle and cuddle and attempt to get rid of the dog hair. Keep up the great work that you are doing.

  16. I have been reading your blog for about a year or so. I, too, am a busy mom of 2/full-time teacher so I don't have time to comment very often on how wonderful your blog is. It is actually refreshing to me that you are keeping it real and being a mom because I feel like I'm not alone in craziness of life.

Perhaps the person that wrote that hate-filled comment has nothing better do to with his/her life than read blogs and write mean comments. You have that sweet little boy of yours to love and spend time with. Don't let negative comments get you down!

  17. That anon doesn't know what she's talking about! I'm lucky if I can get in a couple posts a month. My son is turning 1 tomorrow (I know tear tear) and we're still chasing him around. He tries climbing everything and tries to still eat everything..it's exhausting! I work full time, so I always thought, oh I'll get home, play with the baby, cook dinner, hang out, maybe do a project or read up on some blogs. No...its like come home tired, try to clean, get almost nothing done because little one refuses to play on his own. Ay! And we tried the baby gate too, only to have him screaming and trying to climb out So...we just put a different gate around the tv and let him roam relatively free. Oy whatever works right? Ha :) just keep writing when you can, we'll be here :)

  18. Your pics of your baby are stunning! And since I am here, I do so love your style! The simplicity of it is always an inspiration to me. And seriously, it is your blog and you can post however and whatever you want! If there were stipulations to having a blog - I would have been fired a long time ago. Life happens! Thanks for all your inspirational work! We are slowly remodeling our home and I always come here for ideas.

  19. Seriously? Do NOT allow that comment the privilege of even one more second of your time!

Be the best mom you can be, while you can be! My baby will be 18 years old soon, and I would give anything to be "that" mom again. Enjoy your time with your little one. The rest will come.

  20. Oh my goodness, your son is adorable!
Many blessings on you & your little family =)

  21. What? Someone seriously wrote that as a comment? Beyatch!! I was delusional too and somehow thought I'd have a ton more time during the day with a baby that I did without. What were we thinking?!!! But it feels good to know that other moms out there are struggling with the balance and time management, etc. I'm down to only one post a week and I'm trying not to stress myself out over it. The Coopster is so handsome! I was literally laughing out loud at you actually painting a baby gate:)

  22. How rude some people are, to make such comments.
I have to laugh, even though my child is all grown up I am still involved in the gate business, as in pet gates to
keep my dog out of parts of the house I don't want him in!
    Cooper is just adorable!!

  23. Oh don't worry about that nasty comment - I always look forward to your blog regardless how regular it is! Both photos of your son are really lovely, the 2nd one makes his eyes look really clear and sparkly - a good one for framing? I remember gates; actually I still have one in my garage as I sometimes use it for my dogs!

  24. Why do people have to suck so much? Ignore the creeps who hide behind anonymity. Coop is amazing and so is his Mama's blog- and as long as you've eaten and showered today youre ahead of the game! <3

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love Cooper! BTW, ignore that horrible comment. Normal people dont make other people feel like s***. Has to be something wrong with a fellow human being if they enjoy tearing people down :( So sad!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I feel sorry for anonymous people who make nasty comments. You are doing a great job with all your DIY and being a mother at the same time! Remember I emailed you that our babies are exactly the same age, so I totally understand about getting into everything! I only have time to do any sort of work at night. However, I gave up on baby-proofing, because my daughter just ripped off every sort of corner bumper/protection I installed around, like it was some sort of game :) So like you, I just trail behind her all day, hehe.

  27. I love your blog and I love to read it whenever you post anything new. I don't care if that's three times per week or three times per month. Whatever. Your blog, your rules. Do what works for you. Baby is most important, says the working mom who loves to read your blog! xo

  28. Totally ignore that coward who is afraid to let you know who they are! Just keep doing what you are doing! People who mind don't matter, and people who matter don't mind.

  29. I love reading your blog and enjoy everything you post! It doesn't matter how often you post, your little one is more important than anything else at this point in life. I appreciate the inspiration you have given me and I look forward to new posts, if anything, I'm even more excited when I notice theres a new post!

    ReplyDelete
  30. oh man, I bet "anonymus" doesn't have any babies! ;)
I always enjoy what you post whenever you post it, plus coop is just so darn cute - you're more than "allowed" to be consumed by him!

    ReplyDelete
  31. what the heck?! i think you post a lot actually. and it's fun stuff too. some people post every single day or 3 times a day and their blogs are a snooze. you have plenty of people who like reading so shove off anon! it's not like you post only twice a year, jeez!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Shame on that individual who clearly has never had an infant/toddler! I enjoy your posts however few and far between they may be. I say attempt to look past the insult of it and think of it as a complement! Clearly they love you so very much they must sit at their computer and refresh their browser by the seconds!!!! :) Oh, and as a mom of soon to be two boys I love seeing your posts of the little man too!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. OMG! Don't let it get you down, but, if you want to have a piece of chocolate cake to make yourself feel better that would be completely acceptable!! ;)
    Some people just suck...
I think your posts are worth waiting for, they always make me giggle!!

  34. Try putting aluminum foil around the edge of the blanket so that your dog won't go on it. After she steps on it once, she will never do it again!

    ReplyDelete
  35. yes, dont let it get you down at all- i love your blog! i have a little one that i barely manage to get a post out a week! with a kiddo and working and running a whole house, shit gets crazy! haha
keep on blogging and i agree with you deserving a piece of cake ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anon needs to learn some manners. On the other hand, they are obviously a rabid fan and can't get enough of you ;)

We used that last gate. Simple and it did the job. Before you know it, you'll be taking those gates down because Cooper will be climbing up and down those stairs and running around. It happens fast!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ignore comments like that. I love reading your blog - whether you post every day or just once a week! Anyone who doesn't realize that you are busy with a little one obviously doesn't realize what that entails!

My parents made a baby gate for their house when they got a puppy. Made a frame with 2x4's, and then used banister spindles for the "bars". Worked great, and they just removed it when she was older (and saved it for grandkids...hopefully soon!)

  38. Hi Sarah! I'm just catching up on my most favourite blogs today and of course had to stop by here. Love, love your blog always and it's totally your blog so you post whenever you feel like it. I will always be here to read whatever and whenever you post. :-) Oh, and about the baby gates, I put up one and it was always open because it was just too difficult to open and close. I guess you know it's a good baby gate when adults can't even get out. LOL! Have a great weekend! Carly

  39. Its very easy to sit there anonymously and hit the comment button. I don't care how often you post. Your blog is the only one I subscribe to where I read every word and every post. You are funny and you are genuine and I love that about you... and the blog. I am so glad you are a mother who puts your beautiful baby first rather than a blog. He will only be a baby once so take it all in and absorb every moment {as you seem to be doing}. You don't want to find him 6 years old and realize that you blogged his infancy away for people you don't even know. You are doing the right thing.

    ReplyDelete
  40. People can be so rude! They must not have a baby. I have my blog for a hobby and I post when I have time to and since its a hobby I don't feel the need to do it everyday. If that person doesn't like it then they need to just find a different blog. I have to say you are one of my favorite bloggers and I come to your blog very very often! And we need to do some more serious baby proofing around here too.
