Two Pretty White Plates and Two Plate Wall Inspiration Pics

Tuesday, June 11, 2013

Wooooooweeeee. Alex was out of town on a golf trip this past weekend. Looking after everyone and everything around here while he was gone for three days was kinda hard. Note: He doesn't even really golf but let's not go there right now. Hahaha!

A few weeks ago I decided that it was high time to add some fun to the rest of the walls in the dining room. See? Bare walls.

I have some shelves that I want Alex to build, but for now I thought I would stick to a project that I can tackle on my own. Plates I think I can handle. As long as they don't fall and break (more on that later).

Here are the two inspiration pictures that I've been oogling for the past while:

I've seen some really cool plate walls on Pinterest where the plates are displayed kind of random and haphazardly. They look fun in the pictures online but I just don't think I could live with it in person. Oh, is that a little OCD resurfacing? Yeah, that's what I thought. ;)

Symmetrical and orderly it will be.

So far I've found two round plates / platters that I absolutely love. The first one was a Homesense find. The other I just found on the weekend at Hilltop Interiors.

Plate - Homesense - $20

Plate - Hilltop Interiors - $28

Instead of waiting until I have a great big collection, I think I'll just display a set of three (once I find the third one) so that I can enjoy them right away.

Any tips on the best way to hang the plates so they don't fall off the wall and smash to smithereens? This house gets shaken up daily by routine mining blasts. I read somewhere that Lowes has some plate hangers. Is that all I need? Help!

  1. Those plates are really pretty. I with I could remember whose blog I saw it on, but they used paperclips and hot-glued them to the back of their plates to hang them.

  5. I made my own plate hanger for a plate in my kitchen, using a scrap piece of fabric, hot glue, and a paper clip. It has been hanging there for several moths amidst cabinet doors slamming right next to it. And best of all, it was FREE! http://sweetparrishplace.blogspot.com/2013/03/cheap-and-easy-method-for-hanging-plates.html? Let me know if you decide to try it and what you think! I will never buy a plate hanger again!

  6. I've always just used plate hangers from Lowes to hang my plates. I live near a military base where they "practice" firing artillary, so my house shakes too, and I have never had any fall. They're simple to use and cheap! Love the two you've found and hope you find a third to complete the set---for now!

  7. Hi! I love your dining room and house kind of plain!! I actually thought you did it like that on purpose :-). I have been working on mine the last year or so just trying to make it more simple and plain. My only opinion on this would be to remember less is more and it can get busy quick. And I have always just used plate hangers but you need a longer nail to hang it so the plate doesn't "poke" out from the wall. Enjoy!!!

  8. Love the plates! I think they'll look wonderful in your dining room! I've used the E6000 adhesive and paper clips to hang plates before. It's really secure and there's no worry about the plates coming off. In fact, that may be something to consider. I'm not sure it will ever come off! I've not tried hot glue, but that may be an option if you ever want to use the plate as a plate again. Can't wait to see your finished project!!

these are the very best hangers , you don't see them when used so they are the best, you wet the adhesive let it set over night , voila.I have used them they are ever lasting .

  10. There are these sticky disc plate hangers that look awesome...I wish I could remember what they're called. By the by, when we move to our new home...I'm going to be copying your home style...if that's cool ;). Cheers.

Coincidentally, I just saved a few pins on plate walls last night! Anyhoo, I also found these hangers and, although I haven't used them yet, they look pretty sturdy and have good ratings on Amazon.

They might be like the disc hangers that a few folks have already mentioned but, in case they aren't, you have given me so many awesome ideas that I hope I can give you just one tiny little idea back!

Likin' the plates you started with, too -- they're definitely clean & cheery patterns! Can't wait to see what you come up with down the road. : )

  12. Hi Sarah - I used 3M Command picture hanging strips to hang my plates. They've been up for more than 2 years...no problems and you don't see anything on the front of the plate. J

  13. I use plate-hangers which are fairly cheap and I haven't had one fall of the wall yet! Looking forward to the 3rd plate reveal!

    1. I haven't hung the plates yet!!! I can't find a third round, white plate for the life of me. I've been to Homesense about a dozen times in the last few months and I still can't find what I've been looking for.

Once I find the third one, and hang them all up, I'll make sure to share!

      :)

  15. If you haven't found a 3rd white plate to hang, maybe you could try the secondhand store?
