Here is the longest, most boring story ever on how I finally chose our duvet cover. Sometimes I think it's weird that I write posts about my bed linens. You do too? Oh good, I'm glad that awkwardness is out of the way. ;)
So, a few months ago Alex and I splurged and bought a king-sized bed and new headboard. It was, and still is, glorious.
The only glitch was that not too long before the aforementioned-glorious-event I had purchased a new quilt, duvet cover, and sheet set for our queen-sized bed. Doh.
Old queen-sized bed linens. |

Not wanting to spend more money, I decided that we could make do with the old (but still kind of new) queen-sized duvet, duvet cover, and quilt on our king-sized bed.
Yeaaaaaaaaaah. We fought about who was hogging the too-small covers for seven months before we bit the bullet and picked up a king-sized duvet at Homesense a few weeks ago. Obviously the old bedding was too small. Way too small. And looked..... how do I put this.... stupid.
We bought a duvet but needed a duvet cover. Oh, decisions.
I had had a crush on this set from Pottery Barn for over two years:

I'm pretty sure that it's the dreamiest of all duvet covers. 'Cept I just couldn't justify the price tag:
Items Subtotal: CAD 297.57
Shipping: CAD 25.26
Duties & Taxes: CAD 37.73
Order Total: CAD 360.56

So. I started looking around and thought that this duvet cover from West Elm was really pretty as well:

But again, I just couldn't justify the cost:
Items Subtotal: CAD 257.77
Shipping: CAD 26.83
Duties & Taxes: CAD 39.55
Order Total: CAD 324.15

Then........ just when I was in the depths of no-duvet-cover despair I wandered into a very expensive (yikes) home décor store and spied a soft blue and white striped quilt, just like the duvet cover from Pottery Barn. The price tag was still pretty hefty ($270) but it was $100 cheaper than the Pottery Barn duvet cover set.
{I didn't buy the quilt. But, as I mentioned in my last post I've been saving up my photo session money for a few little home décor splurges. A little voice in my head is telling me to go for it!}
So, with the intention of hopefully getting the blue and white striped quilt, I picked up an inexpensive, white, textured duvet cover set from Ikea for $49.99.
$49.99!!!!!!!!!!
I am super pumped that I actually sort of finally made a decision and that soon we may finally have bed linens that actually fit the bed!
;)
It's a good day.
P.S. We went to Ikea and our truck was jam-packed. Tetris-style. Obviously I'll share more about what else we got a little later.
P.S.S. I didn't put the new Ikea duvet cover on the bed yet because that would require me having to make the bed. I made dinner tonight. You didn't think that I could make the bed and cook dinner in the same day did you?
P.S.S.S. Is $270 for a king-sized quilt outrageous or reasonable? I dunno. All I know is that it has stripes and I want it. Bad.
P.S.S.S.S. Alex went to the movies without me (boy movie with a friend) so I decided to eat ten chocolate chip cookies whilst adding fabric swatches to my cart on fabric.com. Good times!
P.S.S.S.S.S. When I say ten chocolate chip cookies, I really mean six.

I have that same Ikea duvet and LOVE it!!! We've had it for a few years and it washes really well! I've found that the biggest bonus is how the gathers help to hide any wrinkles...I'm not one to iron or steam my bedding...who has time for that?
ReplyDeleteYou don't know how happy this comment has made me! I can't wait to make my bed!!! Hahahaha.
DeleteSeriously though, I'm really glad to hear that it washes well because that is something I was worried about going with white. :)
Ain't nobody got time for that! LOL
DeleteP.S. Target has grey ticking sheets under their Threshold line.
ReplyDeleteThere is supposed to be a Target opening in our city (in Ontario) soon so I will fo sho have to check it out. Thanks so much for the heads up!
DeleteI heart ticking stripes!

This one has two shams with it.
Thanks so much for the links, girl. I did find a few Pottery Barn duvet covers on Ebay but they were all on Ebay.com but I'm in Canada and need to use Ebay.ca. Wah wah. I did find a few options but with tax and shipping it was still quite a lot of dough. Boo hoo.
Delete:)
I got a west elm duvet cover (white pintuck) for I think $100? It is super soft and comfy and going on 2 or 3 years old now! I also would love a quilt, but they are always so expensive!! Maybe try winners or homesense or something?
ReplyDeleteWould a duvet AND a quilt be too hot??
That West Elm pin tuck duvet was also on my maybe list. Soooo pretty! $100 is great deal, especially if it's going on 3 years and you still love it.
DeleteI've been stalking Homesense and Winners for quilts but haven't seen anything I like for months. I'm still looking though!
P.S. The quilt would be more for colour and decoration rather than use. I like to be snuggly in bed, not so much melty. ;)
I love you Sarah and this post!! Love the white duvet cover you picked and that blue and white stripped quilt is dreamy! Can't wait to see it all together!
ReplyDeleteMeggie
Hee hee! Thanks Meggie!
DeleteI think $270 for a quilt is not too much if you are the type of person who is going to love it until it's threadbare. However, I change my mind too much so I would never get a good return on my investment before I wanted a change. If you have a short design attention span like me I would just keep an eye out at Homesense or sew your cover using flat sheets with a similar pattern. Layering in less expensive linens like printed sheets/pillow cases/bed skirts can make a white duvet cover pop and it would be a completely original look.

Ohhhhh, I totally know what you are saying. I would hate to have buyer's remorse only a few months later. Thanks for the advice, I'm going to keep thinking about it and decide for sure! :)
DeleteSarah, you are so funny! I love reading your posts! :) I say keep holding out for a quilt that is more reasonably priced. You know it's out there and the hunt is part of the fun - oh, and the sweet reward of finding the perfect bargain is totally worth the wait! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice, girl! I'm going to look around for another few weeks until I know for sure if I'm willing to shell out the big bucks. :)
DeleteLove this duvet set!!! Love it so much, I'm going to get it for myself. I've been looking for a simple white bedding with a bit of texture. My heart skipped a beat at first because the link you posted was to Ikea Canada & I'm in the Massachusetts. But lucky for me, my local store has it stocked. Looks like I'm off to Ikea this weekend. Wonder what other beautiful things I'll find there at the same time!!
ReplyDeleteDiane
Yay! You'll have to let me know if you like it once it's all set up in your bedroom! :)

DeleteI bought the Atlantic duvet cover and shams at Pottery Barn in the spring (in Toronto because we were in town) and it wasn't all that badly priced. Maybe 175 for all three pieces, king sized as well. I don't understand why they can't ship here from Canada when we have the stores? Baffling I tell you! My husband just said last week it nice that we don't have to change out the duvet with something new since we just bought this one. I laughed and told him this was our "summer look" and I will need something for fall! Silly guy! I love the first duvet set you had your eye on too! So pretty. I also love the ticking stripe! So many choices. It just means you will have to keep checking Homesense for something! At least you know you have the $270 one as a back up just in case you can't find something. Good luck, Kelly
ReplyDeleteJust saw the photo of Cooper on instagram....OMG could that be any cuter? Who knew they made suits that small! Adorable! Kelly
ReplyDeleteThat's funny...when I say 6 chocolate chip cookies, I really mean 10 ;). Only you know your budget but my matelassé quilt was $200 and it's only queen size. J
ReplyDeleteIt's incredible how much duvets and quilt cover sets cost these days. Worth shopping around for. I really like the one from Ikea you chose. Luckily here in sunny Queensland (Australia) we don't have to worry about quilts - I just have a gorgeous white coverlet from Ikea - so simple and light, and of course white goes with everything!!!
ReplyDeleteI wish I knew you were shopping! I just went through the S.A.M.E. exact issue. Alas, I found the most beautiful comforter set from Costco.com - $104.99 for the King size. It comes with a reversible comforter (not duvet cover - perhaps a con?) and 4 pillow cases, 2 of which are also reversible, and a coverlet. We got the "Sofia" one and it's beautiful! Go to Costco.com - to the Bedding Section - to the Bedding Ensembles and Duvets and look at the Tranquil Nights items. They are amazing!
ReplyDeleteOne catch is you have to be able to ship to a US address - and no PO Box. That's easy for us since we live very close to the US border (Canada side.)
Just a tip I like to share with people because I'm obsessed!
I actually have a VERY similar duvet cover to the striped Pottery Barn one, that I bought at... IKEA! mine is a queen and I think it was about $50, so guessing the king one won't be too much more. Sorry if this comment is too little too late though! just caught this post. Hope you find what you are looking for!
ReplyDeleteI have that IKEA duvet cover and I have to say - I've loved it. It's nice crisp cotton and washes really well. Mine is completely worn out and we need a new one but they don't have the grey anymore. I hope you love yours! :)

ReplyDeleteI stumbled upon your site as I have been searching for new bed linens and am struggling with the cost of everything I like. I too love the braided quilt from West Elm but am not sure I can stomach the cost of if at over $300 once you add in all the fees and shipping. I love your old queen set. Where did you get it?
ReplyDeleteThanks! It was just one of those rare finds from Homesense. :)
