Shaker Style Bi-Folds for the Master Bedroom Closets

Wednesday, January 1, 2014

I can't contain my excitement. After many, many, many, many, many years of living with no doors on our bedroom closets (the horror, right?) we finally have the doors ordered, primed, painted, and installed. I pretty much couldn't sleep last night because of it. I kept opening one eye all creepy-like just to make sure it was real and not a figment of my imagination.

In case you are newish here, and because I love to give extremely long-winded explanations, I'll share why it took us so long to get this job done.

When we first moved in, several of the closets had louvered bi-folds that were painted in a ghastly peach-beige. It still gives me the shudders thinking about it. Since I was a big baby about ugly closet doors I made Alex get rid of them all right away - not really thinking about the repercussions (looking at the messy contents of closets for years 'n years).

While we were able to replace the bi-folds in the front entry and breakfast room with new, off-the-shelf bi-fold doors from Home Depot, the master bedroom closets were an odd size and needed custom doors. Custom doors cost a fortune, my friend. A fortune.

So we waited, waited, and waited some more. This fall, after we almost bought a cottage and then didn't (story to follow), we found ourselves with a little bit of extra money that we were planning to use for a down payment. As a surprise, Alex went and ordered the doors. It was his way of saying that we finally get to start working on our house again.

Yay! Working on our house again!!!!!!!!!

Once we picked up the doors, Alex's dad primed and painted them for us (THANKYOUSOMUCH), and we installed them yesterday. (Alex pretty much installed them by himself. I sat back and said things like, "A little to the left. That gap is too small. Raise it up just a tad on that side. No, the other side. Okay now move it back to where it was at the beginning.")

I can't tell you how happy this little bit of progress makes me. I can finally throw stuff on the closet floor without anybody knowing. Ahhhhhhhh, so liberating!

Here are a few pictures of the new doors:

I think I'm ready to start adding some finishing touches to this otherwise plain-Jane room. Those pretty doors are just the motivation I needed!

P.S. I still haven't been able to tame the new, lumpy duvet. I'm pretty sure it's goal in life is to annoy me.

:)

Updated to Add: The closet doors were a special order through Home Depot. They are pine doors made by the company Milette and they are painted in Simply White by Benjamin Moore. The paint colour on the walls is Old Prairie by Benjamin Moore.

  1. Love the new doors! I am sure you are thrilled to have them! I can't imagine not having closet doors! Oh, and from the pictures, the quilt doesn't look frumpy if that makes you feel better! :) Happy New Year! P.S. Can't wait to hear the story about the almost purchased cottage!

    1. Oh yes, thrilled is the word for sure. I still don't know how I lived without them for so long. It seems crazy now!

Thanks for your comment about the lumpy duvet. It does make me feel better that you can't really tell from the picture. :)

Oh yes, cottage story to come!

  2. Your doors came out so well and I just love the details of them and couldn't be better than painted white.

    1. Thanks so much Lynnie! The white makes them so crisp and clean looking - so much better than staring at folded clothes.

  3. Sarah, the doors are beautiful! I pinned them for future home inspiration, since we'd love to build a custom home someday.

Would you mind sharing the wall paint color in your bedroom? I've been looking for a nice creamy off-white to repaint my office and that one looks just right! (I LOVE your son's nursery and used Manchester Tan when I repainted my son's bedroom last summer--it's perfect!)

    Thanks,
    Lisa Frank :)

    1. Thank you so much Lisa!!!

The wall colour in the master bedroom is actually the exact same colour that I used in Cooper's nursery. I painted both rooms and the adjoining hallway the same colour so that the upstairs was cohesive. They've been that colour for a few years already and I still LOVE it.

The colour is Old Prairie by Benjamin Moore. It has a greeny-grey tone to it. So pretty! :)

    2. Thank you, Sarah! I actually have a paint sample of that sitting around somewhere, since I loved it in your son's room. My office is in the basement and gets NO natural light, so I'll have to test it out and see if it looks too dark or not. I appreciate getting back to me so quickly. :)

  4. Lovely...so clean and fresh and finished looking. I understand about the duvet. I bought one once and never got it smooth. It was a fight every day so I have a comforter now.

    1. Louvered doors are the worst, aren't they?

The doors are made by Milette and purchased through Home Depot. They used to show them online but I didn't see them online the last time I checked. Only in a special order book at the store. Good luck.... I hope it doesn't take you as look as it took us!!!

  7. They are gorgeous! I totally get the ripping the doors down part. And we have also lived with no closet doors for about 2 years now, except ours were sliders spanning the whole wall. I'm hoping this is the year we figure out how to make door frames and add closet doors.

  10. I would be so excited too - they're really, really nice :-) I know what you mean by a "lumpy" quilt cover - however, sometimes it can look quite charming - if I were you, I'd just embrace it and accessorise! I love your all-white bedroom - so serene!

    1. Thanks Petra!!! I'm really trying to live with the lumps but part of me wants to just go out and try a different brand of duvet!

Thank you for your sweet comments on the bedroom. The room does seem pretty white. I do plan to add a little bit of colour here and there. But only a little of course. ;)
