Kids Room - Adding Some Accent Colours

Thursday, January 29, 2015

I can't believe that my little dude is already sleeping in his new, big boy room. I was so excited for him that I didn't really have a chance to process what a huge milestone it was. That is, until I peeked into his old, half-empty nursery that very first night. Where did my little, chubby-cheeked ninja baby go!?!?!?

Over the past few months I've been slowly moving things out of the spare room (it's official - I'm a hoarder) in order to move some of Cooper's stuff in. To make it a smooth transition I moved some of his familiar furniture with him into his new room. Here's what I hauled over.

His bookcase (minus the baskets because they're corralling toys in our sunroom):

His armchair for story time as well as his dresser for clothes:

I also brought in a kids table and chair set that I painted many moons ago (when I painted my house with fluorescent yellow paint by accident)(this picture still scares me):

The table and chair set will be getting a simple makeover to avoid stripe overload. I love me some stripes, but I don't want to go too crazy with striped walls as well.

I explained in a recent post that I'm working with the horizontal stripes that were already in the room. That decision has it's pros and cons. It's a lot less work if I don't have to sand and repaint an entire room. To be honest though, I'm kind of over the paint colours. Let's just say that if I were starting from scratch I would probably choose a different wall colour. I still like it, I just don't love it as much as I did way back when.

After making a bland and boring design board thingie I decided that I would need to liven up the room a little bit.

Bland and boring design board thingie:

I decided that I would try to incorporate a few accent colours. This was so hard. You know me. I like the colour white.

The colours I started with included:

Simply White - Benjamin Moore
Old Prairie - Benjamin Moore
Camouflage - Benjamin Moore
Kendall Charcoal - Benjamin Moore

After a lot of deliberation (and anxiety)(things like this stress me out)(I'm weird like that) I finally decided on the addition of two accent colours.

Here they are altogether.... dun dun dun......

Westcott Navy - Benjamin Moore
Palladian Blue - Benjamin Moore

Here's my new plan for the room incorporating a little bit of navy and light blue:

I am loving the look of everything together in the above picture, I just hope it will look nice together real life. Eeeeeek!

What do you think? Love it or hate it? Any suggestions? I'm all ears! :)

  1. Love love everything! It is easier to make the big purchases in neutrals because in the end toys and books add all the accent colours (and often especially for little kid toys-WAY TOO MUCH bright colour!). Is he getting a second dresser or will the nursery dresser be moving back later?

    1. I totally agree. I'm looking for a few small blue accessories to incorporate with the neutral big stuff. I'm going to keep the numbered dresser with coops in his new room. That means I'm on the hunt for a new (or old-new) dresser for the nursery / Baber #2. :)

  4. Love it! Love the horizontal stripes on walls. Great subtle, neutral, boy-relative colors.
Please come do my house next. I'll provide all the cookies and tea you'd like. Bring Cooper.

  5. This is perfect!! All my favorite colors, too. I'm actually planning to paint my office BM Palladian Blue...you know, when "someday" arrives. Could you share where that blue hanging light is from? I LOVE it! I looked on your lighting Pinterest board but didn't see it. Thanks! :)

    1. Hi Lisa,

It was just a random pic I pulled from the internet. I can't find anything similar in the States or in Canada - I think the light was from a store in the UK. If I come across the link I will add it under this post. :)

  6. I love how those are "accent" colours for you, Sarah. I'm one for bright colours myself - I think you'd RUN from my house :)

  11. Love the addition of the accent colours! Though I'm curious - what wall colours would you choose now if you were starting from scratch?

    1. Hmmmm, that is a great question! I still really like the colours that are in the room. The only reason I would choose something different this time around is because the walls were painted five or six years ago and I'm ready for a change. I would love to try a warm white on the walls, with all the colour added through fabrics and accessories. I might try that in Baby #2's room very soon though - as soon as my hubs leaves for the day (he doesn't want me to repaint, lol)!

    1. In Coops' original nursery the paint colour is Old Prairie by Benjamin Moore. In his big boy room, the stripes are Old Prairie and Camouflage by Benjamin Moore. :)

The bed is from Restoration Hardware Baby - I did end up purchasing it (on sale) and I love it!
