Hi Katie! I hope this explanation will make sense..... here goes! I painted the room all over with Old Prairie first. When I decided to do the stencil, I was hoping that I would be able to just leave the walls as is and paint the stencil with white paint over top. However, once I got the stencil in the mail I realized that it wouldnt' work that way. It would have made the pattern opposite to what I was going for (I wanted the trellis pattern to be white). So, I had to prep the wall by repainting it all white first, then applying the stencil with Old Prairie over top. I hope that helps. Let me know if this doesn't make any sense, lol!

We did use the same finish for both paints. I know it's not usually recommended for kids' rooms but we used a flat finish because we have an old house with a lot of imperfections in the plaster walls.

You did a really good job on the stenciling and picking out colours! I LOVE it! I think subtle colours is the way to go with stencils. I can't wait to see the finished room.

It's my dream to get a free stencil from Royal Design Studio. I could never afford to buy one. Their giveaways though never seem to be for Canadians as well, so I might just have to make my own, lol!

Anyway, really nice work! Loving the room so far.

I just found your blog via your Simply Klassic Home link up and I'm so glad I did. This is so pretty. So subtle, yet it adds so much. I love that it's something for your little one to grow with too. This would be the perfect stencil for my almost 6 year old's slanted wonky wall.

I am about to tackle my first stenciling project in my hallway. I hope it turns out half as nicely as yours did!
