Current Programs in place at Austin ISD
- Welcoming Schools anti-bullying program currently in 24 elementary schools. See above link for actual teacher training modules, which provide sample curricula for the teachers to use in the classroom. Trains teachers to introduce homosexuality and gender variance. The program is being discontinued, but the teachers at the 24 participating schools have already been trained to implement the message.
- Planned Parenthood sex education. A handout was recently distributed by Planned Parenthood during health class in Covington Middle School, sending children to the following link about how to give consent to sex (YouTube): Planned Parenthood "Consent 101". The videos feature a straight, lesbian, and gay male couple who are about to have sex and need to decide what to do. According to the videos, the only factors important in this decisions are: 1. Do I feel comfortable having sex? and 2. Do I have protection?
- Library materials - libraries offer sexually explicit books and many LGBT-themed books. Teachers were instructed during Welcoming Schools training to read some of these books during class time.
- Pride Week - AISD dedicates an entire week of school to celebrating LGBT lifestyles. Activities include cross-dressing throughout the week. According to the district website, "At campuses throughout the district, teachers can use LGBTQ-focused lessons and activities that engage, educate and inspire." - Bathrooms - AISD policy FFH Local was updated in 2015 to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation. Harassment against any and all persons should be prohibited. The problem with this policy is that it justifies allowing people with male genitalia into the girls' bathroom because not doing so could be seen as a form of discrimination. There are reports that some schools are already allowing students who are male-to-female transgender into the girls' bathrooms. Parents must find out the individual campus policy on this issue if they want to ensure their daughters are safe in bathrooms, locker rooms, and showers.
Future programs
- New K-5 sex ed curriulum in development based on the 3 R's by Advocates for Youth (download lesson plans below). Sex ed was previously started in 5th grade with the topic of puberty. Expected roll out May 2018. Please note: Teachers may be unaware that this change is being planned, but principals should have been made aware.
- Advocates for Youth was founded in 1980 as the Center for Population Options. As can be seen from the name, it grew out of the eugenics movement that sought to remove the 'unfit' (i.e. disabled, poor, those with lower IQ, people of color) from the gene pool. It now advocates for abortion and unrestricted sexual rights for youth. Is material from this type of organization appropriate for children in public schools?

- "All Are Welcome" is a K-12 teacher training currently in development to replace Welcoming Schools. Planning documents obtained from the district (linked below) show that the desired focus continues to be "diverse families" (gay parents) and gender expression (transgender and other diverse expressions). The focus is not on "advocating" for LGBT lifestyles, but gaining "acceptance" of them. Planned roll out is Spring 2018 in selected schools. According to the documents, SEL (Social Emotional Learning dept) leadership is considering making the training mandatory, as the Welcoming Schools program did not have widespread acceptance among campuses.
